VariantWire®, a consortium supported by GeneInsight®, provides a real-time data-sharing network that allows clinical genetic testing labs to share Variant and Gene interpretations, as well as the supporting evidence.

Data sharing on VariantWire occurs in a secure environment where all case information in the network is de-identified. VariantWire is governed by the VariantWire Committee comprised of one member from each participating entity.  The VariantWire Committee guides the data sharing policies and reviews applications from laboratories seeking to join the network.

Our Story

There is a material need in the field of genetic testing for a comprehensive sequencing and clinical reporting solution that links genomic analysis technology with software / IT infrastructure to streamline the analysis, interpretation, and reporting of genetic test results by clinicians.  Current use of Next Generation Sequencing technology in clinical testing laboratories has shed light on critical barriers to broader clinical adoption, such as: 1) the difficulties in differentiating the small subset of variants of potential clinical significance from the many variants without affect; 2) the labor intensive and time consuming task of interpreting and reporting on the clinical meaning of identified variants to enable diagnosis, prognosis and risk assessment; 3) the inability to access large collections of genomic datasets to enhance our understanding of genetic variation; 4) the inconsistency of interpretations from different laboratories; and 5) the redundant effort associated with each laboratory having to clinically curate its own variant database.  A collaborative approach to addressing the interpretation bottleneck will become increasingly critical to improving the clinical utility of broad spectrum NGS based testing.

Our Guiding Principles

  1. Decisions should be guided by the members’ commitment to patient care.
  2. Decisions should align with each member’s existing institutional policy on data sharing.
  3. Decisions should promote innovations and best practices, and, encourage agile decision making to support development and implementation of Policy
